Purple Emperors and other butterflies
Woodland butterflies of the High Summer
Wildlife Experience
The forest in high summer is a magical place. Birds are actively feeding young and invertebrate activity is at it's peak - the woodlands are buzzing with life. The main target for this walk is the beautiful and iridescent Purple Emperor. They will be active in the tops of oaks and around their food plant, the Sallow. If we are lucky, we may see them coming to ground in the morning and we will try and encourage them with some of our smelly bait. Other scarce woodland species will be in evidence such as the stunning Silver-washed Fritillary, the White Admiral and the small but stunning Purple Hairstreak. We will also look for White-letter Hairstreaks and we will be bringing along pheromone lures to tempt an incredible wasp mimicking moth - the Lunar Hornet Moth. With luck, second generation Wood Whites may also be on the wing. Please note that accompanied children can come for free. Meet at Botany Bay, High Street Green, GU8 4YA nr Chiddingfold
