Nightjars and bats
Summer evenings with crepuscular birds and creatures of the night
Wildlife Experience
The heath on a summers evening is enchanting. Cuckoos will be calling and the scratchy song of the Dartford Warbler will be heard from deep within the gorse. As the light fades, crepuscular and nocturnal species begin to reveal themselves. Woodcock will be roding overhead and Snipe may be drumming over the wetter areas. As night falls the eerie churr of the Nightjar will be heard. These African migrants make the Surrey heaths their home in summer and we will witness them perched and in flight as they hunt their moth prey over the heath. We will have a bat detector with us and as dark falls, we will employ it to see what species are present. If conditions are suitable, we may well deploy a moth trap too which will should attract a host of species at this time of year. Accompanied children are free. Meet at the Moat Pond Car Park, Thursley Road GU8 6LW and please dress accordingly.
